Effects of Immigration on the U.S.

What has been the costs and benefits of immigration both to the immigrants as well as to the United States?
Most immigrants came, and continue to come to the United States for better job opportunities and higher wages.
They thus seek jobs, earn wages, pay taxes and consume public services, and all these activities have significant
effects on the U.S. economy and labor market.  Though immigration also adds significant costs to the economy, the National Research Council (NRC), in a study conducted in 1977, concluded that legal and illegal immigration add $1 billion to $10 billion per year to the U.S. gross domestic product.

Additionally, immigrants have contributed greatly to the cultural diversity of the United States, for example, ethnic restaurants, cultural centers in cities, and so on. However, diversity also leads to costs including more crime, ethnic violence etc.
